  • Raising Awareness of PANDAS/PANS-How Social Workers Can Help-12/11/2025

    Learning Objectives:

    • This session will enable the learner to understand the basic biological processes involved in post-infectious neuroinflammatory disorders such as PANDAS and PANS.

    • Participants will be able to RECOGNIZE key symptoms which indicate the need for the social worker or other medical staff to advocate for thorough and appropriate medical evaluation 

    • Recognize barriers to care and the family burden experienced by PANDAS/PANS families.

    • Participants will demonstrate competency of where to find established diagnostic and treatment guidelines specific to clinicians.

    • Utilize community resources to support these families, especially when unavailable within the institution.

    • Describe histopathological, molecular and immunological changes that occur in the brain after repeated Group A streptococcus infections in an animal model for PANDAS.

    • Elucidate the role that T cell-derived cytokines play in neurovascular and microglial dysfunction in an animal model for PANDAS.

    • Compare the immunological changes in mice with those seen in sera from PANDAS patients.

    • Discuss potential novel therapeutic treatments for PANDAS/PANS.
